International prize for Dutch AI startup Dashmote

Companies are turning into the data, but they do not always know what to do with it. The Dutch company Dashmote helps international companies such as Coca-Cola and L’Oréal to find trends by analyzing images. The Chinese market is a next step. “We can see if curly hair becomes popular.”

With smart algorithms, Dashmote retrieves information from mountains with images. “We process existing and new images from, for example, Google Maps or popular blogs, extracting relevant information and making it usable by analyzing and reporting on, for example, dashboards, which companies can read out themselves”, says co-founder Dennis Tan (29). against RTL Z.

Together with brother Stefan (26) and study friend Matthaeus Schreder (29), Tan founded the company in 2014. And they are doing great: last week, Dashmote was voted the best B2B startup in Europe by Google, McKinsey and Rocket Internet.

The startup has about 20 employees and a turnover of ‘above the million’. “We are making a profit, but have only been doing sales for a year without a sales team,” says Tan.

Customers like Heineken and Tui

That is hard to believe with customers such as Unilever, Heineken, Tui, Philips and Essent. “Tan is called low-hanging fruit”. He did these contacts ‘by networking and understanding what customers want.’ “Everyone can buy artificial intelligence, but learning to understand is second, which is what we are good at.”

Do you want to know what is the most popular drink right now? Or with which products the youth is experimenting? Dashmote offers the answers. Companies can then adjust their marketing and strategy accordingly. For around 30,000 euros they get a year license on the service. “We are working on a lighter version for small and medium-sized businesses,” says Tan.

The Amsterdam company does this largely on its own. Dashmote raised about half a million euros in starting capital in 2015 and has since grown without external financing. “We are good at saving,” says Tan, who works with a relatively small team.

New financing

Last year, the company opened offices in New York and in Vienna. “We started in the Netherlands, but now also grow abroad.” Without naming names, Dashmote now says it has about ten customers in the US. We also test with two customers in China, near Shanghai.

And that is not possible without money. “I can not say too much about it, but we are approaching the completion of a financing round,” says Tan. “Dashmote has potential, there is competition in separate parts, from companies that only deliver data or intelligence, such as IBM Watson, but there are few that make the combination.”

Making friends

With Dashmote, according to Tan, they look little to competition. “What we do is make friends and see who else can help us.” And they have enough friends ‘in the travel and financial sector, in South Korea and Switzerland’. There are plenty of options.

Tan can sometimes still not believe his own success. “Then I have the feeling that it can just be over with Dashmote”, he says. “We can do so much more with this company.”
