Samsung smartphone with AI gives advice when buying clothes

Face recognition technology is evolving at a rapid pace. For example, by now most of the new Samsung smartphones are equipped with face recognition. With the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI, or artificial intelligence), our smart mobile devices are not only capable of analyzing faces, it is also possible to understand our facial expressions. This creates new application areas.

Consider, for example, the virtual fitting of clothing, directly via your smartphone or tablet. How easy it would be if we see clothing that we see on our screen, not only in front of us, but dynamically, so that we can make a much better assessment of whether or not a certain item of clothing is fun.

Samsung AI smartphone analyzes facial expression and provides clothing advice

Samsung Electronics applied for a patent with WIPO on 29 January 2018. The patent entitled “Device and method for recommending product” was published on August 9, 2018.

The patent describes a technology that makes it possible to understand the emotions of a user with regard to a product via a deep-learning artificial intelligence system. This information is used by the smartphone or tablet to give recommendations.

The user can be identified by means of the camera of the smartphone. By means of facial expressions, speech responses and movements of the user, the smartphone is able to determine how satisfied a user is about a certain product. This mainly concerns clothing. Based on this, recommendations are given.

The camera can capture the face and body of a user, allowing the smartphone to display the displayed item of clothing on the display as if the user were wearing it. Six types of expressions can be recognized, from ‘sad’ to ‘happy’. In addition to learning facial expressions, the AI ​​system uses information such as the weight and age of the user, and the purchase history also plays a role in the final recommendations. Other elements that can play a role are the profession of a user, the clothing that a user wears and the income of the user.

In addition, the clothing is grouped, so there are several sweaters, dresses or jackets shown. In the product groups shown, the sex and age of a user is also taken into account. The smartphone can also learn whether the user likes more long T-shirts than short ones. The season and the location are also included in the calculation.

The smartphone can then display the lowest and highest price of a product on the display, allowing the user to purchase the clothing immediately.

Fit virtual clothing with your smartphone

More and more consumers buy their clothing online. Sometimes to full satisfaction, but equally often products have to be returned, because they do not meet the expectations. Both customers and shopkeepers are bathed when this process is better.

In its home country of South Korea, Samsung is already experimenting with so-called smart mirrors, particularly in its own BeanPole clothing stores. Consumers see themselves in the mirror, after which they can also see how the T-shirt is on the back. Or how another color would be of the same type of garment.

Samsung also released an augmented reality app last year to fit virtual clothing. The smartphone app called Pictofit shows users how the clothes would stand, users can then swipe through the garments, after which they always wear something different.

However, the Pictofit app does not use artificial intelligence, so there is no self-learning ability. For example, the app is not able to determine whether a user likes a certain item of clothing. It seems to be a matter of time before fitting virtual clothing becomes the new trend.

If you want to install using your PC, you need the ADB tools installed on your computer. Download the ADB tools via Google’s developers website and download the Android SDK. Downloading the SDK and making sure ADB is correctly set up.

Note: If there is more than one download option, that likely means that you need to download and install the Bug Fix Update for your smartphone or tablet device before you can actually update to 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Step 1:

Before you go trying to update your device, you should check which version of Android you are running. You might already be on the latest version. It's easy to check so follow this guide up to step four. This screen will have a section called 'Android version'. If it doesn't, click 'Software information' to find out.


Step 2:

Scroll down the Settings menu and click on 'About Phone' or 'About Tablet'. If you have a tabbed settings menu then this will appear in the 'general' section.



Refer to Android developer page to choose which version of Android your phone or tablet is running. I.e, 4.0.4 corresponds to Ice Cream Sandwich, an old version of Android that was released in 2013.

Step 3:

Note: Your phone or tablet may require a Wi-Fi connection to search for an update. We suggest you to download the software Droid Over Wi-Fi because the file size can be large.


Choose and click the "Software Update" option. Next it will search available update for your phone or tablet. If update is available, you will be asked if you want to install it. Select "yes" and it will install the new operating system in your device. If you want to install it later, you can download the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow file first. Download Android 6.0.1
